This time, IPL 2026 will be the biggest yet with 84 matches scheduled rather than the usual 74.
The cricket calendar has barely taken a breather after the wrap up of T20 World cup celebrations, and again another blockbuster is here to burn the stadiums with excitement and fun for all the cricket fans. The BCCI ( Board of Control for Cricket in India) on Wednesday has announced the dates, timings, and venues for the first phase of the TATA ILP 2026, raising a green flag for all the 20 matches starting from 28th March 2026, across all 10 venues in India. The rest of the tournament calendar will be announced later, once the Election Commission of India announces the dates for the upcoming elections in several dates.
This is the 19th edition of IPL 2026, and is all set to kick off when the defending Royal Champions (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) take on Sunrisers Hyderabad at their Home Ground. M. Chinnaswamy stadium is all decked up for this grand T20 festival once again on the 28th of March 2026. The first weekend of matches will be followed by a quick shift of focus to the City of Dreams, Mumbai, where Mumbai Indians are set to take on Kolkata Knight Riders at their home ground Wankhede Stadium on March 29. Cricket fans are holding their breath for the matches with high enthusiasm and preparation.
This Indian summer is going to face an extended stretch of cricket fever, as IPL 2026 is going to be the biggest edition of the tournament considering the matches played, extending from 74 matches to now 84 matches. The first few phases of the match are going to be conducted and played in Bangalore, Guwahati, Mumbai, New Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Ahmedabad. During this period four double headers are also planned, with matches kicking off in the afternoon, at 3.30 pm IST, and the evening matches at 7.30 PM IST.
The initial doubleheader of the season is set to take place on the 4th of April, where the Delhi Capitals will face off against the Mumbai Indians in the afternoon game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, followed by the Gujarat Titans facing off against the Rajasthan Royals later that night in Ahmedabad.
Following Rajasthan Royals hoping for a grand opening of the tournament in Guwahati, where they challenge Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. The Punjab Kings are scheduled to play their first home games at the PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh at the same time. Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s new season gets underway under a very different spotlight. The defending champions return as the ones that everyone else is chasing after finally winning their inaugural title last year.
The RCB team is planned to host a total number of 5 matches in Bangalore and 2 matches in Raipur in this IPL 2026 Season. The Punjab Kings team is set to host a total number of 4 matches in New Chandigarh and 3 matches in Dharamshala. The Rajasthan Royals team is scheduled to host matches in Guwahati (three matches) and Jaipur (four matches).
The matches scheduled in Bengaluru are still awaiting clearance from the Expert Committee constituted by the Government of Karnataka, which will inspect the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 13, including a full-scale mock demonstration of match day arrangements to ascertain its readiness for hosting matches of IPL.
